Where you hang your guardian bell on your motorcycle matters — and the rule is simple: the lower, the better. According to the guardian bell tradition, Evil Road Spirits attach to motorcycles from the ground up. The closer your bell is to the road, the sooner it intercepts these spirits before they can cause mechanical problems or bad luck.
The #1 Rule: Hang It Low
The guardian bell should always be mounted as close to the ground as possible. This is the most important rule in guardian bell placement. Most experienced riders hang their bell on the lowest point of the main frame, near the engine guard, footpegs, or floorboards.
Never hang a guardian bell at handlebar height or on the tank — at that height, road spirits would have already reached the engine before the bell could trap them.
Best Spots to Mount Your Guardian Bell
1. Lowest point of the main frame This is the traditional and most effective placement. Use the bell's included metal ring with a leather strap or zip tie to secure it to the lowest visible frame rail. Make sure it can swing freely.
2. Engine guard or crash bar If your motorcycle has an engine guard (crash bar), this is an excellent mounting point — it's low, sturdy, and won't interfere with riding.
3. Near the footpegs or floorboards Easy access and appropriately low. A popular placement for cruiser and touring bike riders.
4. Swingarm For modern sportbikes and naked bikes where frame space is tight, the swingarm is a solid alternative. Keep it on the non-drive side to avoid chain or belt interference.
Where NOT to Hang Your Guardian Bell
- On the exhaust pipes — Excessive heat will damage the finish and could be a safety hazard. - Near the chain, belt, or wheels — The bell could get caught in moving parts. - Inside the tank bag or saddlebag — The bell must ring freely in the open air to work. - Too high up — Handlebar-height placement defeats the purpose of the bell.
